SQE Exam Dates 2026: Complete Schedule

SQE1 consists of two papers - FLK1 (Functioning Legal Knowledge 1) and FLK2 - each taken on separate weeks. The SRA offers two SQE1 assessment windows per year.

SQE2 tests client interviewing, advocacy, case and matter analysis, legal research and legal drafting. The oral component runs over several days with candidates allocated specific time slots.

Registration for each SQE sitting typically closes six to eight weeks before the exam date. Here is what you need to know:

• Book early. Pearson VUE test centre slots fill up quickly, particularly in London and other major cities. Book as soon as registration opens to secure your preferred date and location.
• Reasonable adjustments. If you need reasonable adjustments (e.g. extra time, a separate room), you must apply well before the standard registration deadline. The SRA recommends applying at least 10 weeks before your sitting.
• Cancellation and rebooking. You can cancel or rebook up to a published cut-off date (usually around four weeks before the exam). After that date, you will forfeit your fee.
• ID requirements. You must bring valid, government-issued photo ID that exactly matches your registration name. Check this well in advance.

Choosing the right sitting depends on how much study time you have. Two common approaches:

Intensive route (5-6 months) Suitable if you are studying full-time or have a strong legal background. For example, begin preparing in January 2026 and sit SQE1 in July 2026, then SQE2 in October 2026.

Steady route (9-12 months) Better if you are working alongside your studies or need more time to build confidence. For example, begin in early 2026, sit SQE1 in October 2026, and sit SQE2 in January or April 2027.

Key tips: - Allow at least two to three months of focused revision for SQE1 and at least two months for SQE2. - Most candidates sit SQE1 first, then SQE2 in a later window. You are not required to pass SQE1 before booking SQE2, but it is strongly recommended. - Build in buffer time. If you do not pass on your first attempt, the next sitting is roughly three months away.

Use this checklist in the days before your exam:

• Confirm your booking. Log in to your Pearson VUE account and check the date, time and location.
• Check your ID. Ensure your photo ID matches your registration name exactly. Bring a backup form of ID if possible.
• Plan your journey. Arrive at the test centre at least 30 minutes early. Account for traffic, public transport delays or parking.
• Know the rules. No phones, smartwatches or unauthorised materials in the exam room. You will be provided with a whiteboard or scratch paper.
• Rest and prepare. Get a good night's sleep. Avoid last-minute cramming on exam day - focus on staying calm and alert.
• Check for updates. In the week before your exam, check the SRA and Pearson VUE websites for any last-minute changes or disruptions.
