Geographic Focus: Core strength and market focus is East Anglia (Suffolk, Norfolk, Cambridgeshire and surrounding counties) with an additional office in Leeds to serve Yorkshire clients. The firm acts for local, regional and national clients and highlights sector expertise in agriculture, transport, care homes, university colleges and technology businesses; it also accepts and handles matters with national or international elements where required.

Training Contract

Trainees rotate through multiple seats across the firm's legal disciplines. The programme is structured with regular supervisory meetings and mid-seat and end-seat performance reviews. On‑the‑job development is supported by an in‑house trainee skills programme which includes monthly half‑day technical and essential skills workshops. Trainees work closely with partners and solicitors and are expected to develop both technical capability and leadership potential.

Academic Requirements: Applicants must have at least a 2.1 degree and have passed or will have passed the LPC course by the September of the year they are applying for; or applicants must have passed both SQE 1 and 2 and now require two years or less of QWE (qualifying work experience).

Work Experience Programme

A week-long scheme (one week per year) for penultimate-year law undergraduates where participants shadow solicitors in one or two legal groups, assist with tasks, undertake a hands-on legal research task, and meet partners, solicitors, trainees and apprentices. The programme provides insight into qualification routes and practical hints on building a personal brand and communication skills. The Leeds office is currently excluded from placements.

Pro Bono

The Charities and Pro Bono Committee (launched in 2008) co‑ordinates staff-nominated charitable fundraising and pro bono activity. The Ashtons Charitable Trust (established 2014) makes grants to local charities across Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire and Leeds; the firm organises fundraising events, supports staff participation in sponsored sporting events and donates to nominated charities (examples: Young Lives vs Cancer, Foodcycle Cambridge, St Elizabeth Hospice, Children’s Heart Surgery Fund, YMCA Norfolk).
