SQE1 Revision FLK1 and FLK2

FLK1 covers seven areas of functioning legal knowledge. Business law and practice encompasses company law, partnership, business finance, tax, and insolvency. Dispute resolution covers civil and criminal litigation procedures, ADR, and costs. Contract law includes formation, terms, vitiating factors, remedies, and consumer protection. Tort covers negligence, occupiers' liability, nuisance, and defamation. The legal system and constitutional law includes the court structure, judicial review, human rights, and EU retained law. Legal services regulation covers the SRA Standards and Regulations, professional conduct, and accounts rules. Each subject requires understanding of black letter law and its practical application to client scenarios.

FLK2 covers six areas. Property practice includes residential and commercial conveyancing, landlord and tenant, planning, and property taxation. Wills and administration of estates covers will drafting, validity, intestacy, probate procedures, and inheritance tax. Solicitors accounts requires understanding of SRA Accounts Rules, client money handling, and financial compliance. Land law covers registered and unregistered land, co-ownership, easements, covenants, and mortgages. Trusts includes express, implied, constructive, and resulting trusts plus trustee duties. Criminal law and practice covers substantive criminal law, police powers, criminal procedure, sentencing, and evidence. Property and criminal law tend to carry significant weight in the assessment.

SQE1 MCQs test applied knowledge, not rote recall. Each question presents a scenario and asks you to select the single best answer from five options. Effective preparation requires understanding legal principles deeply enough to apply them to unfamiliar fact patterns. Start by studying each subject area systematically, creating condensed notes. Then practise with MCQs daily, aiming for at least 30 to 50 questions per study session. After each practice session, review every incorrect answer to understand the reasoning, not just the correct option. Track your accuracy by subject to identify weak areas that need additional study. Use spaced repetition to revisit material at increasing intervals to build long-term retention.

For candidates studying full-time, a three to four month revision period for SQE1 is typical. For part-time candidates, allow five to six months. Divide your revision into three phases. Phase one covers initial study of all subject areas in order of difficulty for you, allocating roughly two thirds of your total time. Phase two focuses on intensive question practice and targeted revision of weak areas, allocating one quarter of your time. Phase three covers full mock assessments, final review, and exam technique refinement in the remaining time. Build in rest days to prevent burnout and consolidate learning. Adjust the timeline based on your prior legal knowledge and whether you are studying alongside work.

Complete at least two full mock assessments under realistic exam conditions before the real SQE1. Simulate the full 180 questions in the allotted time, in a quiet environment, without notes. This builds stamina, reveals time management issues, and identifies remaining knowledge gaps. After each mock, analyse your results by subject and question type. Focus your final revision on the areas where your mock scores were weakest. In the last week before the exam, review condensed notes and key principles rather than attempting to learn new material. Ensure you know the exam logistics, including the test centre location, identification requirements, and what you can bring into the examination room.
