How to Pass the SQE

SQE1 tests functioning legal knowledge through two assessments: FLK1 and FLK2. FLK1 covers business law and practice, dispute resolution, contract, tort, legal system, and constitutional and administrative law, plus legal services. FLK2 covers property practice, wills and the administration of estates, solicitors accounts, land law, trusts, criminal law, and criminal practice. Each assessment consists of 180 single-best-answer multiple-choice questions taken over a full day, for a total of 360 questions across both papers. The pass mark is determined by the SRA using a standard-setting methodology, typically requiring around 57 to 62 percent correct answers. Questions test applied knowledge, not rote memorisation, so understanding how legal principles work in practice is essential.

SQE2 assesses five practical legal skills through realistic simulations: client interviewing and attendance note writing, advocacy and persuasive oral communication, case and matter analysis, legal research, and legal writing and drafting. Unlike SQE1, SQE2 uses scenario-based assessments where you perform tasks as a newly qualified solicitor would. Assessments cover criminal practice, dispute resolution, property practice, wills and the administration of estates, and business law practice. Preparation should focus on developing practical skills rather than memorising law, as you are assessed on your ability to apply legal knowledge in professional contexts. Practice under realistic conditions with timed scenarios to build confidence and fluency.

Several providers offer SQE preparation courses, including BARBRI, BPP, University of Law, FQPS, and others. When choosing a provider, consider the pass rate data they publish, the teaching methodology and learning materials, the cost and payment options available, the flexibility of study schedules, the availability of practice questions and mock assessments, and the support structure including tutors and study groups. Course costs range from approximately 3,000 to 12,000 pounds depending on the provider and whether you study full-time or part-time. Some employers sponsor SQE preparation for their future trainees. Compare providers carefully, as the quality and approach vary significantly.

A structured study plan is essential for SQE success. For SQE1, most candidates need three to six months of dedicated study depending on their prior legal knowledge. Divide the FLK1 and FLK2 subjects across your available weeks, allocating more time to subjects you find challenging. Use active recall and spaced repetition techniques rather than passive re-reading. Complete practice questions daily, focusing on understanding why each answer is correct rather than memorising specific questions. For SQE2, practise each skill area under timed conditions and seek feedback from tutors or peers. Build in regular review weeks to consolidate earlier material and take full mock assessments to simulate exam conditions.

On SQE1 exam days, manage your time carefully across the 180 questions per paper. Read each question stem and all options before selecting an answer. Flag uncertain questions for review but do not spend too long on any single question. Eliminate obviously wrong options to improve your odds on difficult questions. Stay hydrated and take advantage of any permitted breaks. For SQE2, manage your time within each station carefully, read the instructions and scenarios thoroughly before beginning, and focus on demonstrating the assessed skill rather than providing the most comprehensive legal analysis possible. After each assessment, do not dwell on perceived mistakes, but focus forward on the next paper or station.

Alongside the SQE assessments, you must complete two years of qualifying work experience to qualify as a solicitor. QWE can be gained at up to four different organisations and includes work at law firms, in-house legal teams, law centres, barristers' chambers, and other legal environments. A solicitor must confirm that your work met the required standard. Unlike the traditional training contract, QWE offers flexibility in how and where you gain experience. Keep detailed records of your QWE including dates, organisations, and tasks performed, as you will need these when applying to the SRA for admission to the roll.
